Christmas 2010
by Tony Ross 12.08.10
The naked branches cast pitiful shadows
over the dead leaves that lie silently below.
As the cold settles in, the winter gray seeps into my tainted, battered soul
testing, once again, my resolve to avoid the dark place
that always seems to be just one short, agonizing step away.
The dark place, where every movement, every breath, even thought
is an effort of despair in contention with a despondent paralysis.
A place where nothing good exist, where dreams are banished,
memory tortures and hope is a distant fading light.
The dark place, just one short step, the door always open, the way always clear.
Nevertheless, I will not take that short step just now, not just yet.
For hope cast a long shadow, although distant and difficult to see,
I will follow that shadow into the light.
Merry Christmas
